United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD) 2005–2014
Vision
The vision of the Decade is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from education and learning to bring about a transformation in society towards sustainability.
Objectives
There are five objectives:
- Give an enhanced profile to the central role of education and learning in the common pursuit of sustainable development
- Facilitate links and networking, exchange and interaction among stakeholders in ESD
- Provide a space and opportunity for refining and promoting the vision of, and transition to, sustainable development – through all forms of learning and public awareness
- Foster increased quality of teaching and learning in education for sustainable development
- Develop strategies at every level to strengthen capacity in education for sustainable development.
Strategies
Seven interlinked strategies are proposed for the Decade:
- Advocacy and vision building
- Consultation and ownership
- Partnership and networks
- Capacity building and training
- Research and innovation
- Information and communication technologies
- Monitoring and evaluation.
Together the seven strategies form a coherent approach to incrementally increasing the promotion and implementation of ESD over the Decade. They will ensure that change in public attitudes and educational approaches keep pace with the evolving challenges of sustainable development.
The Decade will offer opportunities for educators to reflect on, share experiences of, and learn about the implications of sustainable development.By the end of the Decade it will be important to assess how far education and learning have contributed to transforming the way organisations, businesses and personal and collective lives have shifted towards sustainability.
