Stage 2: Shifting towards sustainability – Successful organisational change for sustainability

This project involved ten major corporate and government organisations making change for sustainability. ARIES used a learning-based approach to change management, guided by an action-research process to engage and empower people to implement systemic organisational change. The booklet shares six insights into successful organisational change for sustainability gained by the organisations as a result of this project and aims to inspire readers to take action for themselves.

The ten organisations involved in the research project improved the effectiveness of their sustainability processes and practices. Outcomes included:

• increased capacity of the ten organisations to make organisational change for sustainability
   
• demonstrable outcomes for change including:
  • implementing performance indicators for sustainability
     
  • introducing sustainability into supply chain decision making
     
  • better linking sustainability reporting with strategic planning and performance improvement
     
  • engaging staff and building organisational capacity for change
     
  • identification of levers for change and building executive support.
